Gondomar foi escolhida para Cidade Europeia do Desporto 2017. A escolha da Associação das Cidades Europeias do Desporto acontece no primeiro ano em que se registaram duas candidaturas, tendo Gondomar vencido Coimbra por ser "um bom exemplo de desporto para todos como instrumento de saúde, integração e educação".

Gondomar Cidade Europeia do Desporto sucede a Setúbal (2016), Loulé (2015), Maia (2014) e Guimarães (2013).

Em Gondomar existem 150 associações, 7000 atletas federados e 73720 dos seus cidadãos são membros de um clube ou estão organizados em grupos desportivos (46296 em associações, 16924 nas piscinas municipais e 10500 em academias/ginásios).

Ao nível das infraestruturas, há 7 piscinas municipais (com cerca de 2000 utentes diários), 12 pavilhões municipais, 5 pavilhões gimnodesportivos, 17 campos de futebol, 4 campos de ténis, 5 ginásios de "fitness" e 1 centro de alto rendimento de desportos náuticos, além do Complexo Desportivo de Valbom e do Pavilhão Multiúsos.

Gondomar was chosen as the European City of Sport 2017. The choice of the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport takes place in the first year in which two applications were registered, Gondomar having won Coimbra for being "a good example of sport for all as a health tool, integration and education."

Gondomar European City of Sport succeeds Setúbal (2016), Loulé (2015), Maia (2014) and Guimarães (2013).

In Gondomar there are 150 associations, 7000 federated athletes and 73720 of its citizens are members of a club or are organized into sports groups (46296 in associations, 16924 in municipal pools and 10500 in gyms).

At the level of the infrastructures, there are 7 municipal swimming pools (with about 2000 daily users), 12 municipal pavilions, 5 gymnasium pavilions, 17 soccer fields, 4 tennis courts, 5 fitness gyms and 1 high performance sports center as well as the Valbom Sports Complex and the Multipurpose Pavilion.
