LE SITE:
Fort-de-France est une commune Française située dans le département de la Martinique(DOM). Ses habitants sont appelés les Foyalais. En 2013 la commune comptait 84 174 habitants. Capitale de l'île, Fort-de-France est une ville commerçante, animée du matin au soir par ses multiples marchés et ses nombreuses boutiques. Une navette maritime permet de traverser la baie en 15mn pour se rendre sur les plages des Trois-Ilets. La ville concentre d'importantes fonctions administratives, militaires et culturelles. C'est aussi un pôle économique, commercial et portuaire majeur de l'archipel des Petites Antilles. L'unité urbaine c'est-à-dire l'agglomération au sens statistique et morphologique telle que la définit l'Insee a 125 445 habitants en 2013. Cependant, Fort-de-France est au cœur d'une conurbation de 165 500 habitants, incluant la commune limitrophe du Lamentin où se situent d'importantes zones d'activités et l'aéroport international de la Martinique Aimé Césaire, la commune de Schoelcher ville universitaire, et les communes de Saint-Joseph et de Case Pilote.
Fort-de-France a changé plusieurs fois d'appellation : les Français baptisent le site du nom de Cul-de-Sac Royal (1635-1672), il devient la paroisse puis la ville de Fort-Royal (1672-1793) avant de devenir Fort-de-la-République ou République-Ville à la suite de la Révolution (1793-1794). La ville redevient Fort-Royal (1794-1807) et enfin Fort-de-France depuis 1807.
Détruite à plusieurs reprises par les éléments naturels et par des incendies, Fort de France offre un patrimoine relativement récent. Ainsi, les deux monuments les plus attachants de la ville, la Bibliothèque Schoelcher et la Cathédrale Saint-Louis sont typiques de l'architecture métallique qui marqua la fin du XIXème siècle.
Au coeur du centre-ville, le Grand Marché, ou Marché aux Epices, est le plus grand marché de l'île. Sous sa grande halle de métal et de verre, vous trouverez un amoncellement de sacs et récipients divers au contenu attirant : Vanille, épices en tout genre, piments, bois bandé, rhums arrangés, décoctions énergisantes... A l'extérieur, les étals sont eux chargés de fruits et de légumes pays.

In 2013 the municipality counted 84 174 inhabitants. Capital of the island, Fort-de-France is a trading city, livened up from morning till night by its multiple markets and Its numerous shops. A sea shuttle allows to cross the bay 15mn to go on the beaches of Trois-Ilets. The city concentrates important administrative, military and cultural functions. It is also a major economic, commercial and harbour pole of the archipelago of Lesser Antilles. The urban unity that is the urban area in the statistical and morphological sense such as defines it the Insee(National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies) has 125 445 inhabitants in 2013. However, Fort-de-France is in the heart of a conurbation of 165 500 lived, Including the bordering municipality of Lamentin where are situated important business parks and the international airport of Martinique Aimé Césaire, the municipality of Schoelcher university town, and the municipalities of Saint Joseph and Case Pilote.
Fort-de-France changed several times naming: the French people baptize the site of the name of Cul-de-sac Royal( 1635-1672 ), it becomes the parish then the city of Fort-royal (1672-1793) before becoming Fort-de-la-République or Republic-city following the Revolution ( 1793-1794 ). The city becomes again Fort-royal (1794-1807) and finally Fort-de-France since 1807.
Destroyed repeatedly by the natural elements and by the fires, Fort de France offers a relatively recent heritage. So, the most charming both monuments of the city, the Library Schoelcher and the Cathedral Saint-Louis are typical of the metallic architecture which marked the end of the XIXth century.
At the heart of the city center, the Big Market, or Worked in the Spicy, is the biggest market of the island. Under his big hall of metal and glass, you will find a pile of bags and diverse bowls in the attractive contents: vanilla, spices of all kinds, hot peppers, bandaged wood, arranged rums, energizing decoctions ...
