About this cache: New Hampshire once had a large industry surrounding the quarrying of granite, this gave it the nickname of "The Granite State." Granite stone walls, curbs, buildings, and even bridges can be found throughout the state. At one time, it appeared that almost every town had at least one quarry. Although most of the granite quarried was used locally, New Hampshire granite has journeyed to many places in the world to become part of monumental buildings, such as the Library of Congress, the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, the Brooklyn Bridge, The Pentagon, and many Civil War monuments.
New Hampshire is home to many beautiful granite mountains. It is often said that New Hampshire's section of the Appalachian Trail is the "crown jewel" of the 2,000+ mile foot path, with rugged terrain and incredible views from the top. New Hampshire also hosts many other mountains, including Mount Monadnock, one of the most climbed mountains in the world.
This cache is a ammo canister located along the Pumpelly Trail, which goes to the summit of Mount Monadnock. From the trailhead, the walk to the cache is approximately 12 minutes. Total ascent is about 300 feet. The trail is rocky and has lots of tree roots on it, most of them being avoidable. The trail can be muddy during shoulder seasons. Children should be ok with this short hike, but pets are not allowed on the trail. If you have more time to kill, I suggest continuing onwards for a couple hours to reach the summit!
The trailhead is at N 42° 54.070 W 072° 04.495, which is about a half a mile down East Lake Road from its junction with Route 101. Park along the side of the road near the trailhead. Then, just go where your GPS tells you, following the obvious trail.
The cache is about 40-50 feet off trail, and should be pretty easy to find. The coordinates are within 22 feet of accuracy.
Enjoy!
