Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Emerald Coast, also known as the Flamingo Coast.

From pre-Columbian times, this area has been known for its harvesting of salt and fishing. Throughout ancient Maya/Yucatan history, the salt here was one of the most sought after salt in the area. Researchers say that, in ancient Maya times, Yucatan white-salt was worthy of the nobility as far away as central-Mexico. Enjoy the amazing colours of the different “Salt Evaporation Ponds” in various states of readiness.  To access this cache site, you will be driving on a well-maintained paved road flanked by mangroves on either side, just a short distance along the coastline. You will see shallow salt-flats which, at certain times in the year, can appear very pink in the center and white salt crystals along the banks.  These mangroves are also home to the Flamingo and Snowy Egret.
