Geocache Description:

To get to this hidden pill bottle park at one of the listed parking areas and hike the NCT. This is privately owned land so be respectful of the owners who have allowed the trail to go through their property. Wear orange during hunting season to make yourself visible.

Pie is the most popular dessert on Thanksgiving. Pies have dated back to ancient Egypt. The early pies were nothing like we think of pie today. Usually the outside (what we would call a crust) was not edible, it was used to hold the filling.

The settlers in early America baked pies for practical reasons. A pie uses less flour than bread so they could be made easily and cheaply. A pie was also easily divided to feed hungry workers and children.

As pioneers moved west the pie took on many fillings. In northern states pumpkin was popular and they were sweetened with sap from the maple trees. In Maine blueberry was so often used that blueberry pie is the official dessert of the state. In the south a silky pie was made using sugar, cream, egg, and sometimes bourbon. In PA shoofly pies were made using molasses. They made meat pies and pot pies as well. Florida used limes, native to the area, to make key lime pie. In the Midwest, dairy was used to make cream pies. The French immigrants in New Orleans made pecan pie with pecans given to them by the Native Americans.

Today's pie as we know it is a symbol of America's traditions and land of plenty. There is even the phrase "American as Apple Pie". What kind of pie do you like?
