Yummy mashed potatoes! Ever wonder where the potato came from and who decided to smash it? Wait is it potatoe or potato? Anyway... the potato is from the New World. Yep that is correct. The Spanish explorers brought the potato to Europe around 1536 where it soon became a staple for the poor.
As far as the mashed potato, we do not know exactly who started it. The Incas preferred their potatoes mashed. A french man, Antoine Parmentier in 1771 held a competition on ways to make potatoes, so they may have come from there. Others believe that the English around the 1600s made mashed potatoes with gravy.
I do not believe any of us really care where it came from we are just happy to partake of the potato in all it's many forms! How do you like your potatoes?
