Centennial Park Nature Trail trail starts at the Tui Track which runs off the grass clearing below the car park. It is a loop trail which will take 30 - 60 minutes to complete. You will be taken along parts of a number of different tracks located within Centennial Park. The trail is well maintained and sign posted, just follow the Nature Trail arrows. An information pamphlet may be available at the start of the walk, full of details on what you will see and discover on this trail.
Coastal fortifications were constructed in New Zealand in two main waves: around 1885 as a response to fears of an attack by Russia, and in World War II due to fears of invasion by the Japanese.
The fortifications were built from British designs adapted to New Zealand conditions. They typically included gun emplacements, pill boxes, fire control or observation posts, camouflage strategies, underground bunkers, sometimes with interconnected tunnels, containing magazines, supply and plotting rooms and protected engine rooms supplying power to the gun turrets and searchlights. There were also kitchens, barracks, and officer and NCO quarters.
You are looking for a small container attached to something which in turn is hidden inside something else. The cache is hidden about 15 metres from the WW II Pill Box. Room for small swapables & Travel Bugs. Please BYO Pen.
Great for children or walking the dog. We hope you enjoy the location as much as we do.
The car park area is on Morton Way which can be accessed from Beach Road or Rae Road off Aberdeen Road. The park is accessible at all hours but the road through the park has gates which will be locked at night.
