Geocache Description:

Here is another edition in our puzzle series providing you history of various towns in SE Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

N 41° 39.AB[C+3] W 070° 47.[D-1]EF

The Mattapoisett area was originally purchased by Governor William Brenton from the Wampanoag chief Metacomet in 166E. Brenton left the area to his son who then sold it.

The town of Mattapoisett was settled in 175A and officially incorporated in 185D.

Early industry included logging and farming, but Mattapoisett became best known as a center for shipbuilding and whaling. Some 400 ships were built in the town's shipyards from 174C until the 1870s, including the Acushnet, the ship that Moby-Dick author Herman Melville sailed on and later deserted.

Francis David Millet, an author from Mattapoisett that died on the Titanic, was born in 184B.

A fictitious future Mattapoisett features largely in the 197F novel Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy.
