Geocache Description:

This geocache is placed with the kind permission of Leadhills Estate

Leadhills Estate is a fragile habitat and working estate with sheep farming and shooting. All geocachers are reminded that they must comply with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, this includes keeping all dogs on leads. (http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/).

This geocache is placed at the crash site of RAF Hawker Hurricane Mk I / W9112. Sgt Pilot George Stevenson of the Royal Canadian Airforce lost his life in the crash.

At the time of the accident, Hurricane W9112 was attached to 59 Operational Training Unit (59 OTU), 81 Group.

During local flying with 81 Group, the pilot of Hurricane W9112 flew into a hillside at 1,900ft, presumably in bad visibility, at 20.00 hrs [on 21 July 1941]. The exact cause was not known but the pilot had relatives in the area and he was warned not to fly over Ayrshire as the weather over the hills [in that region] was bad.

The accident occurred at Lowther Hill. This is in the vicinity of the present-day NATS Radar Station, and not far from the former lead mining village of Leadhills.

Sgt Stevenson was laid to rest at Carlisle (Dalston Road) Cemetery.

The propeller from the crashed plane can be seen in the Leadhills Miners Library.

There is no vehicle access to this cache. It is a private road and you cannot drive on it. Access is by foot, bicycle or horse only
