In 1902 the Elida post office opened and has continued since serving this vast ranching community. One of the versions on how Elida got its name was that John Gee, who surveyed and sold lots on this townsite in 1902, named it after his daughters, Ella and Ida.
Elida is situated on the Llano Estacado along the drainage of Boone Draw.
