The campus area of Fudan University hosts, beyond the science, many fine examples of creations of art. Together with the architecture and the many green areas they contribute to make Fudan just as an inspiring place as the rest of Shanghai. This mystery will take you to a few places on the north campus area.
- A At N31° 17.962 E121° 29.955 near the gate area you will find a large stony statue standing on a pillar. The total number of Chinese characters on the pillar gives you the number A.
- B At N31° 18.046 E121° 30.043, just next to the big lawn, there is a large pot. The total number of legs and handles of the pot gives you the number B.
- C Not far away from the pot there is a man together with a furry companion. The total number of legs in the artwork will give you C.
- D There is a sundial somewhere on the campus area. It is locatated at N31° 18.X96 E121° 29.Y02. Find the sundial to be able to find D=X+Y.
- E At N31° 17.928 E121° 29.800 you may find a piece of art related to mathematics. If you were to glue the ends together in the obvious way, which topological object would the result resemble? The first letter of the German sounding name of the object gives you E.
- F In order to get the number F you will need to visit three locations, all with sculptures in form of a bust. The busts depicts three now dead persons. F is the sum of the years these persons passed away. At N31° 18.026 E121° 29.722 you may find a bust of a great Chinese physicist. The second bust is in the vicinity of the south gate, near the big stony statue. The third bust is near the location where you found the number E.
- G At N31° 18.030 E121° 29.842 you may find a another kind of time measuring device together with a number objects heavily related to knowledge and studies. The number of objects gives you X. In the near vicinity of this location there is another piece of art with two very large specimens of the same kind of object resting on top of each other. The four digit number printed on both of them gives you Y. The sum of X and Y gives you the even number G.
- H This is a picture (see the attached file) of a rather large piece of art near one of the outer gates, just next to the international students dormitories. Which colour is the dominant one in this artwork? The initial letter of the colour gives you the number H.
To find the final location for the cache, calculate
A + B + E + G + 15915 and
C + D + F + H +23630.
Then attach a decimal point to each number in a suitable way. You may check your answer in the checker below. Remember to be stealthy and to bring your own pen. It is recommended to bring a pair tweezers as well.
