目前に広がる草原は「草千里（くさせんり）」と呼ばれ、烏帽子岳（えぼしだけ）の側火山として活動した千里ヶ浜火山の火口跡です。

この一帯は、芝生のような草地になっていますが、これは、昔から放牧地として利用され、牛や馬が長くなる草を食べ続けているからです。

この雄大な自然の中で、牛馬がのびのびと行きてゆく姿は、そのまま阿蘇の風物詩のひとつになっています。
