HISTORY: Shaft School, which is located on the east side of Hadley Road, south of the I-69 overpass, was built with bricks from a nearby brickworks. This brickworks was located off the road and in the area where Curtiss Road is today. The original was a wooden shanty and was named after the Shaft family who owned property here. School was held here until the 1950's. Children transferred to Cramton or Hadley Schools for the elementary level and into town for the upper grades, although it was still only mandatory to complete through the 8th grade most kids continued on finishing with a high school education. Today the school is a private residence.
