This is actually a great church that is definitely not on the rocks. It hosts an excellent Boy Scout Troop and many humanitarian efforts. Church on the Rocks is a reference both to the specific cache location, and to a church that was once the largest structure in Rockwall and had a congregation of more than 11,000 people. The only problem was that the televangelist/minister/founder of that church was essentially a crook. D Magazine called him an "up and coming star" in 1987, but that was before he was exposed, the church in financial ruin, and he fled town with pockets of money towards a rapid fall from grace, both personally and professionally. It is an interesting local history that you can read about if interested. The building still exists, though the gaudy gold panels were removed from the exterior after the building was sold in a sort of trade with another church to help repay some of the debt accrued by the Church on the Rocks.
