Geocache Description:

GreenBLAT and KiwiLeon, and MorganEd invite you for the Grand Finale camping and BBQ event.

This has been a regular event for eight years at Omana Regional ParkMuriwai BeachBlackberry FlatsKauaeranga ValleyWhatipuBroken HillsDickey’s Flats and Wentworth Valley. This year's final Waitangi Weekend event will be held at Weka Point Scout Camp in the Kaweka foothills, Hawkes Bay.

Weka Point is a Scout campsite situated in Rissington, Hawkes Bay, 20 minutes out of Napier. It is surrounded by a horseshoe bend of the Mangaone river. There are a number of walks and geocaches in the area. Weka Point is possibly the second oldest scout camp outside England and certainly one of the older in New Zealand. The campsite is the property of the Scout Association of New Zealand and consists of 6.5 hectares of land, which was gifted to the scouting movement in 1949 by Mrs G Absolom of Omatua.

Camping will be available Friday Saturday and Sunday nights with the event BBQ Saturday night.

FRESH AIR, EXERCISE, AND CACHES...

We are planning group walks to caches on Saturday and Sunday and will put the details up here closer to the date. These will likely involve strenuous exercise, getting hot, or getting wet but of course finding some caches. Or just hang around the river and go for a swim. Please watch "Announcements" in the logs section below for details.

OR YOU CAN JUST COME ALONG FOR THE BBQ

The BBQ will be fired up Saturday at about 4:30pm. Please bring your food to grill, and a salad or side dish to share, along with plates, cutlery, drinks etc.

...AND STAY FOR THE CAMPING TOO

For those opting to stay on and join those of us camping, we have a block booking in the camp for Friday Saturday and Sunday nights.

There is a fee of $10 per person per night ($5 for under 10 years old, and free for under 2 years old) which doesn't include servicing so any help to clean up the camp on the final day will be most welcome. Can you please indicate numbers on your log.

Facilities include kitchen area with gas cooking gear and fridge, open eating area with fire pit in middle, toilet & shower block, and room for up to 100 tents. Please bring drinking water as water supplies can be getting low by this time of year.

There is a flying fox type electric lift that everyone can put their gear on from the carpark and it will bring it to and from camp, Its easy to use and saves carrying armfuls on the 500m walk to the camp. Sorry there is no wheel chair access due to the swingbridge across the river. There is limited parking for motorhomes in the carpark, which will need to be self contained.

How to get to the Weka Point Scout Campground

Travelling south, on SH5 14km after Te Pohue turn right onto Glengarry Rd, 15km turn right onto Puketitiri Rd, carpark 5.6km on right

Travelling north, SH50 to Omahu, Swamp Rd, Dartmoor Rd and Apley Rd, left to Puketitiri Rd in Puketapu, carpark 4.5km on right

Or just follow your GPS

Please note there is limited phone coverage in the area.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive with a full tank of gas to avoid the 40 min round trip to Napier to gas up, as some of the activities planned will probably involve driving up to the Kaweka access roads. We'll carpool to reduce the carbon footprint but allow for up to 250km travel.

All are welcome, Come One, Come All

Please bring any Travel Bugs and Geocoins for others to enjoy and if you want some Travel Bugs and Geocoins to travel please bring them along too.

If anyone wants to attend but has logistical difficulties such as transport or camping gear, log a note and anyone who can help out please respond. If need further info, txt or phone GreenblAt (Alan) on 0274 664164 or KiwiLeon (Leon) on 021 1243152.
