Geocache Description:

Welcome to the delightful little hamlet of Rowlestone, and this addition to the popular Church Micro series of caches.

Please note, if you treating this as a cache and dash and look at nothing else I encourage you to at least take a look at the tympanum above the church door inside the porch (see below) which dates from the 12th century.

The Church

This is the church of St. Peter in the fabulous little hamlet of Rowlestone and is situated with great views to the Black Mountains.

Although small in size this church more than makes up for it in things to look at. Firstly as you enter the porch look up at the tympanum above the door which depicts Christ and four angels and, presented this way, is probably unique! It is thought to date from the 12th century. There are many other interesting carvings (the two to either side of the tympanum for instance) in and around this church which probably owe their existence to this church's relationship with Kilpeck (and it's fabulous corbels) a few miles away. Amoungst the others two of note are St. Peter and his Guardian Angel shown on the south side of the chancel arch upside down! Tradition says that St. Peter was actually crucified upside down in Rome!

The building originally dates from about 1130 and consisted of an aisle, nave and apse but, like many, has been updated and changed over the centuries, of note being the tower added in the 16th century, and three bells added in the 17th. The base of the graveyard cross and the simple font are original 12th century.

The Cache

Parking can be had in the car parking waypoint, and the cache is very close by - a micro-sized cache tucked in.
