Geocache Description:

An event, in the darkness, on top of a mountain.

Cold, wet, windy, miserable.

You probably woudn't like it anyway.

This event is intended to make you miserable. It will be dark. Very dark. It will be wet. Very wet - I've arranged it. There might even be a guest appearance by my mate snow. And his mate wind-chill will also be joining us.

You can only log this event as "attended" if you are present at the above co-ordinates, in the cairn at the SUMMIT of Tibradden on Friday the 30th of December 2016 between 7.00 and 7.30pm. We will leave the parking waypoint at 6.30 pm.

There is space for roughly a dozen cars on the roadside at the parking co-ordinates (and even more if we park each other in) and from here I would allow approximately 30 minutes to walk to the event location... I did it this afternoon in about twenty minutes. As this is part of the Dublin Mountain Way trail, there is a reasonable path to the summit and OSM mapping in the area is good. Perhaps now is a good time to download a new updated map to your GPSr?

Equipment

A torch is an absolute must for the ascent; it will mitigate some of the misery; and the darkness. A head torch is a good idea.

Walking boots with good grip and ankle support are also required; you also might like a walking stick.

Clothing will be appreciated. Even though it will be dark, you will be in company. Especially warm clothing - layers are the smart way to do it. Waterproof and windproof will probably be a plus - this is Ireland and it's winter... Gloves and a hat are all the rage in December. Lip Balm is optional.

GPSr and Phone are also recommended...

Warning

Night hiking is inherently risky. By making your way to the event location under cover of darkness, you are accepting an increased level of risk; the terrain is manageable, but this does not mean that it is safe - you must exercise personal responsibility, caution and prudence. There are areas of mud and slippery peat along the way. There is one section that is distinctly ankle-breaky where particular care is required. The T rating reflects the fact that this is not expected to be an easy undertaking. And then there's the weather...  You have been warned.

Leave No Trace

Leave No trace

The event is planned in accordance with the "Leave No Trace" principles.

Please respect these principles when making your way to the event location. The ascent route passes through woodland under management by Coilte.

Flag Counter

There will be darkness.

There will be misery.

Wouldn't you rather stay at home in front of the fire?
