Placed to celebrate Jersey Heritage Festival
The co ords take you to a structure. La Moye Quarries, close to La Corbiere on the south-west corner of Jersey, were once the island's largest, and one of the great industries of the island. Stone from La Moye was used in the construction of St Helier Harbour, but it was also exported and used to build the Thames Embankment. The Jersey Western Railway was extended from St Aubin to La Corbiere, chiefly to provide access on a branch line to the quarries. Today the excavated area is used as a holding reservoir for the island's desalination plant, which converts sea water to drinking water The structure was a crusher.The Stone was hauled up from the quarry in a ‘box’, a kind of broad wooden frame with low sides, and dropped onto the roof of the crusher house. The roof was built with a slope down which the stones would slide towards the jaws of the crusher. As they came out of the crusher they were sifted in sizes by a mechanically driven, revolving cylindrical riddle or sieve down which, as it rotated, they passed. The riddle was tilted an the smallest holes in it were at the top and the largest at the bottom. The railway wagons came along the siding into the crushing-shed and the crushed stone fell straight into them and so loaded without any handling. At the co ords is a plaque.
