November 8th, 2016, saw the election victory of Republican Donald J Trump over his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton. While Trump won the electoral college in a convincing fashion (306-232), Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by over 2 million voters. This was a hard fought campaign on both sides with insults flying, FBI and wikileak involvement, biased media, misleading polls, and yuuuuge campaign rallies. In the end Donald Trump managed to convince enough of his supporters that he had the vision to Make America Great Again and become the successor to Barack Obama, despite all odds.
Behind every winning campaign is a brilliant campaign strategist, and Trump had one of the best: Kellyanne Conway (a polling expert in her own right). She knew the path to victory lies in the electoral college and came up with a strategy that would get Trump over the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to become President. I had the opportunity to meet her shortly after the election, and as we were talking I saw her notebook open to a page titled "The Path to Victory". Here's what it said:
Georgia + Indiana
West Virginia
Montana
Oklahoma
Kentucky + Pennsylvania
Florida + Texas + Wyoming
Nebraska
I wasn't sure how this was enough, but Kellyanne caught me peeking at her notes and said that this was all I needed to get me to where I wanted to go.
