Good Ol' Fashioned Snowball Fight

Good Ol' Fashioned Snowball Fight

A snowball fight is a physical game in which balls of snow are thrown with the intention of hitting somebody else. The game is similar to dodgeball in its major factors, though typically less organized. This activity is primarily played during months when there is sufficient snowfall. Today, the activity is notable for its prominence in the western world. Modern snowball fights tend to have very loose official regulation or constant properties if any rules exist at all, and so can only loosely be referred to as a game. However, a common snowball fight played for fun will often have these characteristics: There is crude formation of "teams", usually two groups of opponents throwing at each other. Those in a fight often do not behave malevolently; a target is usually not viciously assaulted by snowballs. There is minimal physical contact, aside from perhaps wrestling. In contrast to other forms of fighting, there is usually no intention of bodily harm. Construction and use of snow forts is usually permitted.

One of the greatest snowball fighters lives amongst the West Michigan geocaching community. Though it’s been years since his last major snowball fight, CacherX4 was once known as one of the fiercest snowball throwers in the land. It was once rumored that he could throw a snowball made of lake-effect snow 88 m.p.h. without the snowball disintegrating!

However, his fame has not come without a price. X4 was rumored to be involved in the Great Squirrel Snowball Fight of 2001. As the story goes, X4 was demonstrating his famous snowball-throwing velocity when, depending on who you ask, he accidentally hit a squirrel that was climbing up a tree. Seeing this as an attack on one of its family members, an army of squirrels began throwing their nuts that were stored away at X4. After a battle that lasted over two hours, X4 came out as the eventual winner after the squirrels exhausted their supply of ammo. The fight left X4 with an eye injury that forced him to wear glasses for the rest of his life.

Although he claims to this day that he did not hit the squirrel on purpose, the fight left an impression on X4. He gained a newfound respect for the little furry nut-hoarders. As a way to honor the squirrels in the fight, X4 has put out a series of caches over the last few years called “Xtreme Nutz,” which by the way, X4, isn’t it time for another tribute cache?
