Geocache Description:

This is an EarthCache and has special requirements for logging it.  You cannot log a Found It without responding to the logging requirements set out below.

Only one find claim per Message. Each Geocacher claiming a find must submit an individual response. One team can not lodge a response on behalf of a group of people.

A fascinating geological outcrop right on the top of the hill above a sandy beach.

Walk further on up to the top of the hill.  There you will find some shale rocks and fragmented shale on the ground.

What is shale?

Basically, Shale is mud - a mix of flakes of clay minerals and tiny fragments (silt-sized particles) of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite. It is sedimentary in nature.

What is the colour of shale?

Because Shales are typically composed of variable amounts of clay minerals and quartz grains with the addition of variable amounts of minor constituents, the color of the rock may vary from red to dark grey.

Where can you find Shale?

Shale rocks are those that are made of clay-sized particles and are have a laminated appearance. They are a type of sedimentary rock. Shale is the abundant rock found on Earth. They are usually found in areas where gentle waters have deposited sediments that become compacted together.

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS:

Above GZ you will find a white flag pole (there is a cache located here, too). Look around you at the ground at the top of the track, and the rock formations on the seawards side of the hill.

*Describe in your own words, the type of rock prominent around the flag pole area. (NOT the rocks, etc., at the base of the pole itself.)

*What is the predominant colour of the shale here?

*How do you think the shale came to be located here?

*Take of photo of yourself OR your GPS to show a view of GZ. Include it in your message, but please do not post it in your log, it might give too much away.

Please MESSAGE your answers to the CO via the link at the top of the page. I don't deal with email very well.
