Geocache Description:

Southside

Please only attempt this cache during daylight hours.

The Rockwall Cemetery, or the Rockwall City Cemetery, as it is sometimes called is a small African-American cemetery that has been active for more than 150 years. At one time it was called the Southside Cemetery, but there is no hint of that name in the cemetery today. Some of the headstones are in extreme disrepair and others are sunken sites that remain unmarked with the interred unknown. While many of the headstones are typical for their times, others are mere concrete blocks with a name hand-painted on it in an apparent slapdash fashion. Another headstone appears to have been written with a stick by a young child when the concrete slab was still setting (near the fence by the entrance road, under a tree).

More than 20 of those interred here served in the military. They served in both World Wars as well as in other wars and conflicts abroad. Most of the military men have sites that have been well preserved and maintained.

In 1979, The First United Methodist Church of Rockwall built the building adjacent to the cemetery, and held their church services there from 1981 until 2003. In 2003, the church expanded and built a larger church on more land across the street from the Rockwall Library, the new Rockwall Courthouse, and Utley Middle School. The church sold this building and its surrounding land to Heritage Christian Academy which has since expanded and built new buildings on this property. The access road to the front gates of the cemetery winds westward past the cemetery, then southward to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church which opened its doors at this location in 1992. This Catholic Church moved here from 306 Rusk Street in old downtown Rockwall. That church was previously a Baptist church, and since the Catholic Church relocated, the building has been home to a Presbyterian Church. Can you say musical churches?
