Geocache Description:

In the 1870s, construction of the Cincinnati Southern Railway (CSRR) connected Scott County with urban markets centered in Cincinnati and Knoxville. Sadieville developed as construction crews moved through the area and used the crossroads community of Big Eagle as a staging area for their operations. By the mid-1880s, Sadieville possessed a handful of businesses and amenities commonly associated larger towns. Growth continued at a brisk pace in the later decades.

Today, the town contains an impressive collection of late Victorian-era and early twentieth-century commercial and domestic architecture. In addition, Sadieville has statewide significance for its important role as a departure point for African American migration to Kansas during the late-1870s. In March 1878, about 150 people from Scott County boarded trains bound for the Great Plains. African Americans from Scott and Fayette counties formed the nucleus of Nicodeumus, the most successful and best-known of the black towns established during the era. The historic district retains integrity from the circa 1880-1962 period and continues to reflect the history of commercial development and race relations in post-Civil War era Kentucky.

This geocache is one of 12 geocaches that comprise the Scott County Geotrot. Passports are to be given out at the August 12, 2017 Scott County Geotrot event. Geocachers will visit all 12 geocaches along the trail and stamp the corresponding block on the passport and turn it in for a prize as supplies last. After the event, passports will be available both inside the Georgetown-Scott County Tourism office located at 399 Outlet Center Drive, Georgetown, Kentucky and outside the tourism office in the designated Scott County Geotrot passport box after hours. Completed passports can be turned in here as well.

Codeword for geo passport is TRAIN. Please remember to rehide the cache containers discretely. Permission to hide geocaches has been obtained by the property owners.
