Sin dalla sua realizzazione, in concomitanza con via Toledo, piazza Carità è stata pienamente inserita nella vita cittadina con un movimentato mercato il quale però fu ridimensionato all’inizio dell’Ottocento e limitato alla vendita di alimentari. Nel XVI secolo vi fu eretta la chiesa di Santa Maria della Carità.
Nel 1887 vi fu collocato il monumento a Carlo Poerio allo scopo di ricordare gli scontri che lì si erano verificati con i moti del 1848. Nel 1939 la statua fu spostata in piazza San Pasquale a Chiaia e la piazza fu intitolata a Costanzo Ciano, ma il suo monumento fu poi sostituito nel 1971 con quello di Salvo D’Acquisto, vicebrigadiere ed eroe nazionale.

Since its creation, in conjunction with Via Toledo, Piazza Charity has been fully inserted into city life with a lively market which, however, at the beginning of the nineteenth century it was reduced and limited to the sale of food.
In the sixteenth century there was erected the church of St. Mary of Charity, and in 1887 there was placed a monument to Carlo Poerio in order to remember the riots that there had occurred in 1848.
In 1939 the statue of Carlo Poerio was moved to Piazza San Pasquale a Chiaia, and the square was named after Costanzo Ciano, but his monument was replaced in 1971 with the Salvo D'Acquisto, corporal and national hero.
