Before the completion o Hwy 81 (5 miles to the east), Hwy 121 was part of the Meridian Hwy. The Meridian Hwy connects Mexico to Canada and is located on the 6th prime meridian. The old Meridian bridge, finished in 1924, completed the "Meridian Hwy" on Hwy 81 and soon became the main route rather than Hwy 121.
