A very big event in Crofton's history is the completion of the Gavins Point Dam in 1955. This opened up 30,000 surface acres of recreational lake and stimulates thousands of visitors every year to Crofton. Crofton has been labeled The Friendliest Little Town by a Dam Site! The name seems to have stuck.
The Gavins Point Dam history center was built in 1976 on Calumet Bluff, the site where the Corps of Discovery held council with the Yankton Lakota in 1804.
Look closely at the sign - curiously I could find no information on the long gone business.
