Dunwich keeps on drawing me back. It's one of those places which is well worth taking some time to explore. This is a letterbox placed in a part of the village that many people don't know about and somewhere I hope you'll enjoy visiting.
Note that to complete this cache you'll need to follow some compass directions for a set number of metres. A compass or the ability to project a waypoint or an understanding of back bearings will be necessary.
Letterboxing Directions:
IMPORTANT: These instructions were changed on 3 April 2022.
The coordinates will take you to a spot where you'll see something that matches the cache description. There's no need to search here, instead you need to take a look at the object. The bottom line of text on the object contains six "words". By "words" I mean six obvious sets of letters and/or numbers. Use these "words" and one other piece of information from nearby to substitute for the following letters in the directions below:
- A: entire line, number of times the letter "a" appears
- B: first word, number of letters
- C: second word, number of letters
- D: third word, sum of the digits
- E: third word, first digit (not letter)
- F: fourth word, second digit
- G: fourth word, third digit
- H: fourth word, fourth digit
- J: fifth word, second digit
- K: fifth word, number of times 0 (zero) appears
- L: fifth word, most frequently occurring digit
- M: sixth word, only digit
- N: sixth word, number of letters (not including the digit)
Now follow the directions below to uncover the final cache. The way should always be fairly obvious and you can follow paths rather than take a direct route - as long as the path is heading in about the right direction then the distance is what matters most:
Stage 1: Walk (don't drive!) on a bearing of AMD degrees for NKE metres. At this point you'll find something to read with lots of information on it
Stage 2: Walk (really, don't drive!) on a bearing of GKB degrees for EFH metres. You should arrive somewhere that you can see five arrows. Enjoy the view
Stage 3: Walk on a bearing of ELC degrees for ABK metres
Stage 4: Walk on a bearing of EDD degrees for GJL metres
Stage 5: Finally walk on a bearing of NHG degrees for AGM metres
This will bring you to the final location where you'll find the letterbox. It contains a stamp - please do not remove this - if you have a log book of your own you can use the stamp in your logbook. Just don't remove the stamp from the container.
Access:
Access to the cache is along clear paths. Do take care, especially if you have animals or children - there are a range of dangers in these sorts of locations. Mud. thorns and nettles may all be encountered along the way, depending on the time of year. As always in Dunwich, if you find yourself close to the sea then watch out for children and animals - the cliffs erode rapidly and are unstable.
There might just be parking for a car or two at the stated coordinates but please do not block access for locals. There is plenty of parking at the beach car park in Dunwich (see waypoints) which is a much better place to park I find. It's difficult to access Dunwich using public transport.
