John Byron was born in Albury a descendant of a pioneering family and lived at Richmond NSW until the death of his father who was an instructor in saddlery at Hawkesbury College. Leaving school at 15 John came to Melbourne and became an air jockey on early commercial flights to King Island. This experience supplying rural farming communities was a forerunner to his later success as NSW Manager for Daniel Harvey Machinery. In 1960 he returned to Melbourne and began Cattlemen’s Equipment, incorporating Thunderbird Electric Fencing on the corner of Webb St and Princes Hwy.

A President and Life Member of the Berwick Show Society and Life Member of the Harness Horse Society of Victoria, John also assisted the development of local youth programs, was President of the Opportunity Shop which he organised to be built in Webb St, and a member of Narre Warren Rotary. For ten years John was a City of Berwick Councillor who gave strong support to the work of voluntary groups. He was involved with heritage projects such as The Cheese Factory and in emergency housing. During his time on Council John served as Mayor in 1984-85 and was Chairman Southern Area of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works.

John was a passionate supporter of global friendships between cities of the world. He played a vital role in the current City of Casey Sister City relationships and actively promoted their value to other cities. He commenced the Sister City News and became National Chairman of The Australian Sister Cities Association. His global friendship work was internationally honoured with the prestigious Dwight D Einsenhower Medal and he was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for Service to the Community. "Don’t follow the crowd”

The cache is an eclipse mint tin containing a stash note and log paper plus a FTF prize. Please BYO writing implement. The park is usually pretty quiet but be aware of people walking through or playing nearby. We rated this 2/2 it's fairly easy to find but you may need help if you're under 5'6. Take the geo kids for a play on the playground while you search.

Congrats to TheWelder on FTF :)
