Near this spot was Dr Tibbles' Vi-Cocoa factory, manufacturer of various chocolate products. After the land was bought in 1899, the factory in 1903 employed around 600 people, two thirds young girls. It burnt down that year, was re-built, and then suffered another fire in 1917. The company became bankrupt in 1922 and eventually the building was taken over by The Electric Hose and Rubber Company in 1929.
So what was Vi-Cocoa? Dr Tibbles claimed to have invented it, and promoted its health-enhancing properties. One advert claimed "it restores bodily vigour in whatever way jadedness or fatigue is brought about, and at the same time raises drooping spirites, and thus promotes the happiness of the people generallly". Dr Tibbles' product range included Dr Tibbles' Coca tablets, Dr Tibbles' Brain Feeder and Dr Tibbles' Child Restorer. Dr William Tibbles does not appear to have been a qualified medical practiciioner; the 1871 census gives his occupation as "eclectic medical practicioner".
