[en] Polop Castle, known as the "Castellet", was built in the Almohad period, between the 12th and 13th centuries, to defend the local Moorish area from Christian attacks. It is evidence of a troubled period of history with territorial wars and high taxation of the poor. Like other similar fortifications, Polop Castle is positioned on a prominent point, as its main role was to guard these important land. The castle continued to play a significant role after the Chrisitan conquest (Reconquista), especially after the signing of the Treaty of Almizra (between the Crown of Aragon and Crown of Castile), when it became the first line of defence against the Crown of Castile.
The castle was probably the Castillo de la Aljubea, which is recorded in historical documents after the Chrisitan conquest.
It is constructed of tapial or rammed earth on a base of masonry. The best surviving part of the castle is it cistern. This was an especially important part of the castle which was difficult to access and therefore supply.
