Geocache Description:

Calumet Bluff, the site of the Gavin's Point Visitor Center was the site of the 1804 meeting with the Corps of Discovery and the Yankton Lakota.

The two groups met in the shade of an oak tree. Seventy of the Yankton Lakota showed up. The Lakota called the bluff White Bear Cliff because a white bear was killed there. The word Calumet refers to a Peace Pipe; more specifically it refers to the golden eagle whose feathers adorn the peace pipe. It was here among the Yankton Lakota that the Corps first encountered tipis.
