Welcome to RNZAF Wigram, the spiritual home of the RNZAF. This seems as good a place as ever to remember the P-51 Mustang. An outstanding Fighter of WW2. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, just 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October. Originally it was powered by an Allison V-1710 engine. This had some issues with power at altitude, and so the good old Brits experimented with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine which vastly improved its performance. It was now able to escort Bombers right into Germany and compete with the German fighters. The RNZAF ordered 370 P51's. 30 were delivered in August 1945. As the war was all but over, they were put into storage and the remaining order cancelled. Eventually, they were activated and flew with the Territorial Air Force (TAF) in 1 (Auckland) 2 (Wellington) 3 (Christchurch) and 4 (Dunedin) Units. A few were lost in accidents, and 5 Pilots were killed. The last P51 in the RNZAF flew on 30 May 1957. In total 15,586 P51's were built, and served in various Air Forces up until the 1970's! The Isreali's even modified 4 frames to be able to use their wings to cut telephone and telegraph wires!!!
