Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I am placing around the rural churches of Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church. Co-ords are for the church car parking in front of the church gate where there is room for several cars. You will feel like you're driving down someone's drive!

This is the thirty-first in the series and starts at St. Michaels church in Llanfihangel Tor-y-Mynydd (I couldn't fit the Llanfihangel part in the title) - roughly translated as 'the church of St. Michael on the breast of the mountain'. Very impressive name although the church is quite small!

This simple church was restored in 1853 but has a medieval chancel and nave and was originally Norman. The church is currently in the process of being restored in various ways but inside there is a pre-Reformation altar with five dedication crosses which is a little unusual, the bellcote was added during the 1853 restoration and you can still see the base of the churchyard cross as you approach the door.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answers to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go:

As you approach look at the roof - how many small crosses are there on top? A

How many bells in the bellcote? B

How many small crosses are on the porch (you didn't add this one to your roof total did you? No - good!) The number on the porch is C

Head round to the door in the tower. How many vertical wood panels make up the door? D

Take a look at the hinges - how many bolts on one hinge? E

Now look down at the stone door frames. You will see an inscribed pattern. How many points on both patterns in total (ie the number on one and double it - I know it's easy but sometimes you have to spell these things out)? F

So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° 4B.EA(A+C) W 002° 4(D-B).F(F-C)C

Best not do this after nightfall as there is a house nearby, but you are looking for a small clip-lock container with room for small swaps.
