The railroad from the east to Crofotn was abandoned in 1976.
Reliable sources tell me that in the 60s Crofton teens would challenge Hartington youths to race from Hartington to Crofton following the dances held in the Skylon Ballroom in Hartington. According to my sources, the Hartington boys would race out of Hartington first while the Crofton boys in their 1957 Chevy would let air out of the tires and ride the tracks at considerable speed to outwit and out-race the Hartington boys every time. Upon arriving in Crofton (in front of the Hartington racers) they would air up their tires and triumpantly await the arrival of the losers.
