Geocache Description:

A group of Afrikaans travellers searching for a place to settle, known as the Trek Boers, arrived in Pofadder in 1889, attracted by it's perennial spring. They started farming here and many of their descendants are still here today. Some people might think the town takes it's name from the snake of the same name in Afrikaans - a Pofadder (one of South Africa's most venomous species). But no Pofadder actually gets it's name from a Khoi-Khoi chief, Klaas Pofadder, who first settled here with his people in the 1800's because of a sweet water spring in the area. When a mission was established later, the name stuck.

Some fun facts:

* In good seasons perhaps 75mm of rain will fall but most seasons are bad. Some cities in Europe receive more rain in one day than Pofadder receives in a year. Certainly not a place where you would want to start a lawn mower service center.

* It is said that Pofadder had more windmills than any other town in South Africa. During 1927 the first boreholes were sunk in Pofadder and by the year 1958 there were no fewer than 130 windmills in town. Today Pofadder is dependant on water from the Orange River only 49km away.

* Pofadder is a town so remote you'd only go there under extreme circumstances. But in spring you can enjoy it's natural beauty when it shows of all it's pretty colours.
