Another cache on the Kepler Track. Walk or boat to this remote location.
Many people pass through here each year. Some overnight at this hut. Please note that hut fee apply for this. Different rates for trampers in the summer season compared with the off-season. Check with a DOC centre for this. Many people have a day trip in and out having lunch at the hut. From the enormous swing bridge at Rainbow Reach, one of the track entrances, to the hut takes close to 2 hours. On the way take the time to see the inland lake. Spirit Lake and do the earthcache there "Spirit Lake Kepler Track GC960YZ". When you get to the hut take a dip in Shallow Bay. As this is a National Park no dogs are allowed. Take out all your rubbish. In the off season there is no hut warden, no gas cookers provided, no flush toilets (there is a long drop). What to take? Warm clothing, good footwear (tramping boots not needed), first aid kit, good rain coat (it's NZ weather changes quickly), toilet paper, insect repellant a must. Before you make the trip into the Park let a responsible adult know your intentions. Cell phone reception- nowhere on the track but is usually ok on the beach at hut in places. If you are actually tramping the whole Kepler Track you should visit the Te Anau DOC visitor centre and fill out an intention form and purchase hut tickets. Note that at times in the Winter parts of the track (the high alpine section) can be closed due to avalanche risk. Cache is a plastic container inside a plastic box. Contains a log and a pen. At times there could be about 40 people around so take care. On morning original cache placed there were 46 at hut. Some stayed on the beach overnight around their fire and music from their boat... Was quite a party. New cache location (20.8.22) away from hut in the grass clearing. Cache is a plastic jar with a pill bottle inside housing a logbook. No pen.
