Portugal and Britain are best friends. In fact, they have the oldest friendship in the entire world.

Officially, it is called the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, and it has been in effect since both countries signed the Treaty of Windsor in 1386.  To seal the deal, KKing John I of Portugal (House of Aviz) married Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (see the image below).

Since then, the best friends have helped each other in difficult times. For instance, England helped Portugal in the Seven Years War against Spain in 1762, and Portugal allied with England during World War I.

And, of course, in 1679, King Charles II of England gave the people of Madeira Island the special right to sell wine to Britain and all her colonies.
