Geocache Description:

A quick nano search in one of Mt Roskill's corner parks.

Rose Park was created in the early 1970s across the road from the former Mt Roskill Borough Council building which at the time of writing is finally being restored.  This corner is one of the most historic in Mt Roskill - on one corner across from GZ is Three Kings School, the district's first school which was opened in 1879.  The school was known as Mt Roskill School until 1943 when it was renamed to its current name.

As mentioned, across the street from GZ is the site of the former Mt Roskill Borough Council buildings which were opened in 1957, some nine years after the borough council came into existence from the earlier Mt Roskill Road Board.

On the other corner is the Ranfurly Veterans' Home. The then Governor General Lord Ranfurly called for public donations for the creation of a home and hospital for veterans of the South African War (or Second Anglo-Boer War) which would also serve as the national monument to the conflict.  The home was opened in 1903 and through the 20th century served many veterans of conflicts.  With the fading of the second world war generation, in 2011 the home was substantially refurbished to cater to new generations of retirees.

That brings you to GZ - the coordinates should take you to the corner of Mt Albert and Mt Eden Road (originally Three Kings Road), the site of the first store in Three Kings. The store opened in 1903, mainly to service the veterans' home across the street and also became the post office and telephone bureau. Near GZ you'll see a sundial, unveiled in 1973 commemorating the 25th anniversay of the creation of Mt Roskill borough.  The ubiquitous rose gardens are still in existence and at one time at the southern end had a water feature in the form of an artificial waterfall.  Take a look to the end of the park and you can still see the remnants of this feature.

Take a look at the memorial near the corner, dedicated to the Women's Suffrage Movement.  Plaques recognise the women that have represented Mt Roskill at various levels of local and central government and was opened in 2013 on the 120th anniversary of the granting of women's suffrage in New Zealand.  The sculpture is based on a camelia flower, which was a symbol of the movement.

Concentrate your search on the monument and women's suffrage and you can't go wrong.  You are looking for a nano (sorry) which means no room for trackables or swag and you will need to bring your pen to sign the log.
