Kirkby Stephen is a small market town in Cumbria. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The town has many cafes, restaurants, pubs and fish & chips shops for refreshment. There is some limited parking in the Market Square where there are public toilets and a TIC (limited winter opening hours). There is also a large (free) car park situated in Silver Street 100 yards from the town centre.
Hartley is a small village across the River Eden from Kirkby Stephen and accessible by car or more directly by footpath. There are no amenities or other facilities.
The A685 is a busy road but there is a footpath. There is no footpath on the minor roads so dogs should be kept on a short lead at all times. The road between Hartley and Winton is used by large HGVs visiting the quarry so be aware when using this short section of road.
All new caches are Micro or small and contain a log only so please BYOP, the small caches may have room for small souvenirs or TBs, tweezers may also be useful. No caches are placed in walls and there is no need to remove any hard material (stones or rocks) to find them. All caches are accessible from the public highway and there is no need to enter private property to find them. Some caches have no hint as there are limited hiding places and only basic caching skills will be needed to find these. Please replace exactly where found.
