A beautiful road and enjoyable drive, that holds a mysterious tale. There is parking close by, with a short walk or 4x4 to the GZ. Take some time to enjoy the wonderful views here and the abundant Australian wildlife
This is a tale about a deer hunter .... Early one morning, with the moon still quite high, he parked his vehicle on a trail and quietly slipped into the bush, high up on the mountains. He hoped to make it to his favorite clearing without spooking any deer in the area.
As he was walking, he noticed a shape of what looked like a very large animal, ahead on the trail. Oddly, while it didn't appear to be running, it seemed to cover about 6 metres in just two strides and it moved with stealth, not a sound to be heard. The hunter clicked on his flashlight.
"What I saw made my hair stand on end," he wrote in his report with the Alexandra police. "The creature was about 7 foot tall and it had to weigh at least 250 kilograms!" .... He described the creature as, muscular and covered with dark fur, with long arms and a slightly hunched posture. "I have seen a few animals in the Australian bush in my time and I am absolutely certain that this is not any creature I have seen before!"
Within moments of their encounter, spooked by the flashlight, the creature quickly moved down the side of the mountain and was gone. With his camera, still in his pocket, there been no time for the hunter to collect his thoughts, let alone take a photo. Much to the amusement of the police, upon hearing his story.
With no physical evidence, the hunter was determined to prove his story and thankfully had recorded the position with his GPS. He returned to the site of his encounter many times over the years, found many strange footprints and markings within the bush, but never again encountered the creature.
To this day, the tale is still told amongst deer hunters, many of which avoid the area. Perhaps, though they wouldn't admit it, they hold some belief in the hunters story ...
As chance would have it, I have a friend who hunts in the area and knows of the tale - he knew of the supposed coordinates and passed them on to me .... so fellow geocachers - are you up to the task? ... Can you find this mysterious "creature" hiding in the bush?
