Geocache Description:

This cache is placed with the permission of the University of Cambridge.

The 800 Wood was planted to commemorate the University's 800th anniversary and was opened in 2009. It covers 10ha of formerly arable land adjoining Madingley Wood, an ancient woodland which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. More than 15,000 trees of 13 native species were planted, and there is a natural regeneration area where seed stock from the ancient woodland is encouraged to grow. A woodland path in the shape of a figure of eight runs through the wood, and there are views East across to Ely Cathedral.

The Wood is open to the public during daylight hours. There is no car parking at the Wood, but parking is available close by at the American Cemetery car parks on Cambridge Road (during the Cemetery's opening hours) and at their main entrance on the A1303. The car park gate is locked at 5.30 pm.

This is a natural environment and at times, grass, nettles and thistles may be high. We recommend that you wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
