Geocache Description:

Welcome to Wilwell Farm Cuttings nature reserve, an important SSSI with an abundance of wildlife and plants that have recolonised this ex-railway corridor.

Whilwell Farm cutting brought the Great Central Railway line beyond the boundary of West Bridgford, shaping its route down through Ruddington as part of their fast route from Nottingham Victoria to London Marylebone. The line was progressively closed during the late 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts although a substantial section of it further south remains operational as a heritage railway under the same GCR banner. Today the area has largely reverted to its former appearance with a substantial amount of woodland, pools and marshland that supports a fascinating array of plants and wildlife with plenty of birds and insects to identify. This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust whose volunteers help maintain the reserve. Their website gives a lot of information about their work and the other sites they manage. This cache is not difficult to spot. Don't worry too much about the paper that forms the log, I am experimenting with it to see if it can cope with the vaguaries of the British weather -its made of stone and is supposed to be waterproof! Do try and use waterproof ink on it though. Please replace all elements of the cache exactly as you find them otherwise it could be compromised as this reserve attracts lots of families and dog walkers. Thank you and enjoy!
