Il Bioparco di Roma è il giardino zoologico di Roma. Attualmente ospita 1144 animali di 222 specie diverse. Si trova all'interno di Villa Borghese.
Nel 2008 è stato visitato da 780 057 persone.Il Bioparco fu concepito, come zoo, nel 1908 da un'organizzazione il cui scopo era quello di destinare una zona della città come esibizione di specie animali esotiche a scopo educativo. Lo zoo aveva una superficie di circa 12 ettari e fu costruito nella parte settentrionale di Villa Borghese. I lavori iniziarono il 10 maggio 1909 per terminare nell'ottobre del 1910 con una spesa di Lire italiane 1.477.147.90. Il 2 novembre, arrivava a Roma il treno che portava da Amburgo il primo gruppo di animali destinato a popolare i vari ambienti preparati per loro. Lo zoo fu inaugurato tra grandi festeggiamenti il 5 gennaio del 1911. Primo direttore della struttura fu lo zoologo tedesco Knottnerus-Meyer.Lo zoo fu interamente progettato da Carl Hagenbeck, all'epoca famoso addestratore, che aveva già aperto uno zoo ad Amburgo. Infatti il parco aveva lo stesso stile di quello tedesco: canali e fossati al posto delle sbarre, ed ampi spazi verdi.
La situazione per lo zoo durante la grande guerra fu davvero precaria ed il suo degrado divenne sempre più evidente, nonostante alcune aree fossero state rinnovate ed altre completamente ricostruite. Comunque particolare importanza fu rivolta alle attività di ricerca scientifica sotto la direzione del Prof. Ermanno Bronzini (1956-1978).
Nel 1970 il rettilario fu chiuso a causa delle sue pessime condizioni. I lavori di ristrutturazione durarono ben nove anni e solamente nel 1983 poté essere riaperto. Il 13 febbraio 1983 è stato inaugurato con una struttura ampliata, rimasta invariata sino ad oggi. Malgrado le tante difficoltà, il Giardino Zoologico ottenne diversi successi riproduttivi con specie rare o minacciate, come l'elefante asiatico (di cui si sperimentò per la prima volta l'allattamento artificiale), il tapiro malese, l'orango, il licaone, il gorilla ed il rinoceronte nero solo per citarne alcuni.
Per la prima volta nel 1994 fu presentata l'idea di trasformare lo zoo in un bioparco, cioè in una struttura che conserva una risorsa naturale, che sia un lembo di territorio o un gruppo di animali a rischio di estinzione, ed effettua ricerche scientifiche con maggiore rispetto dei diritti degli animali e spesso svolgendo anche delle attività di educazione ambientale. Nel 1997 fu presentato il progetto di come avrebbe dovuto presentarsi nel futuro il parco; questo seguiva i principi enunciati dalla Gilman Foundation e conteneva le linee guida per i futuri sviluppi. Nell'aprile del1998 fu fondata la società Bioparco S.p.a. grazie ai finanziamenti del Comune di Roma (51%), della Costa Edutainment (39%) e del Gruppo Cecchi Gori (10%). A causa degli scarsi successi economici conseguiti, è stata creata una Fondazione che gestisce lo zoo dal 2004.
Bioparco di Roma is a 17-hectare (42-acre) zoological garden located on part of the original Villa Borghese estate in Rome, Italy. There are 1,114 animals of 222 species maintained.The zoo was conceived in 1908 to hold exotic animal species for exhibition. Unlike other zoos at the time which mainly worked for scientific criteria, this zoo was designed for the entertainment and amusement of the people. The zoo covered 12 hectares (30 acres) and was erected in the northern part of the Villa Borghese estate; it was opened on 5 January 1911.
The zoo was designed by Carl Hagenbeck, who had already opened a zoo in Hamburg Stellingen. The park was built in the style of that in Hamburg: ditches and pits instead of bars, and generous green spaces.
This initial success did not hold. Attempts were made to stock the zoo with especially rare and exotic animals. Various park expansions were undertaken and in 1926 a further expansion was planned into the neighboring red deer park. In 1933, the architect Raffaele De Vico began his work in the new areas, which were to hold two main attractions: the large aviary and the reptile house which opened in 1935.The zoo began to deteriorate, although many areas were renovated and others fully rebuilt. In 1970, the reptile house had to be closed due to its ailing condition; its improvements took about nine years and it was finally re-opened in 1983.The idea to transform the zoo into a biopark was first suggested in 1994. In 1997, a master plan was produced based on the principles of the Gilman Foundation. In April 1998, the organization Bioparco S.p.A. was established to be financed through the city of Rome with 51%, from Costa Edutainment with 39%, and from Cecchi Gori with 10%.
