The church building dates from around the year 1400. It has a residential tower attached to it in which the priest lived. In the late 15th century the elaborate eastern window was added.
Newcastle, at the edge of the Pale, was frequently attacked by the Irish striking out from the Wicklow Mountains; by 1400 there were six fortified tower-houses in Newcastle, the tower in the church is the only one still remaining in a habitable condition.
The Church Micro IE series is open to everyone; if you have a church you would like to place a cache at then please contact THE_Chris through Geocaching.com. This is to keep track of the numbers of the churches and give you the general format for the cache page. In the UK there are thousands in the series so we have some catching up to do! Also, if you currently have a published cache at a church that you would like to include in the series, get in contact with THE_Chris and it can be added.
