Geocache Description:

The Middlesex Greenway Trail

THE ROUTE OF THE BLACK DIAMOND EXPRESS

The trail’s right-of-way originates from the Easton and Amboy Railroad, a major branch of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. It was constructed in 1875 to haul anthracite coal to a transfer dock in Perth Amboy. The line was eventually consolidated with other bankrupt railroads in 1976 and became part of Conrail. The line was abandoned in 1991.  The 3.5-mile Middlesex Greenway connects the towns of Edison, Metuchen, and Woodbridge in northeastern New Jersey. The paved pathway follows the route of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad freight line.

This trail is a project of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Office of Parks and Recreation.
