Located in Whilwell farm cutting, the view west includes a stretch of the former GCR Nottingham to London railway line with some of its supporting infrastructure still visible as you walk around this SSSI.
This cache is located on the route of a circular walk around Whiwell Farm cutting nature reserve which is designated as an SSSI. Apart from the muted roar of distant road traffic, it is a very calm and still place and so easy to stand and with just a little effort conjure up the sight and sound of steam engines hurrying their loads of passengers or coal south towards Loughborough, Leicester then London. Today you are more likely to see lesser spotted woodpeckers, tree creepers and dragonflies and in season an abundance of native plants and trees that thrive in the wet marshland that lies between the path and the former railway line. This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who own and manage the site. Their website gives a lot more information about their work and the other sites they manage locally. There is limited parking on Ruddington Lane near the access to the reserve. There is a working farm nearby though and the access road is used regularly by large tractors and trailers. Please park considerately and don't block the approach -the agricultural workers here are great guys and we don't want to antagonise them in any way!
