The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust have created a circular walk around this SSSI. This cache requires a slight deviation from the walk to a piece of old railway infrastructure that nature is slowly reclaiming.....
Whilwell farm cutting SSSI was formed from the land re-designated when the Great Central Railway line was closed by the Beeching axe in the 1960s although the track remained more or less intact until well into the 70s. While nature has worked its magic on virtually the whole of the site, there is the evidence of railway infrastructure here and there and this hide brings you to one of the more prominent remains. I think it was an occupation or maintenance hut that used to provide equipment storage and weather protection for the linesman patrolling his "length" of track. The remaining foundations are pretty formidable...... it will all be there for another fifty years or more yet!The original cache was homemade but that has long since vanished, replaced by a very common object these days. You will need a pen of course and tweezers may help. It is NOT in the nearby brick culvert and the bird box you can see is the real thing so please avoid touching it. This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who are responsible for the upkeep and management of this SSSI. You will enjoy the results of their efforts as you walk round the reserve.
