De um modo geral as praias podem ser definidas como um depósito de sedimentos, sedimentos estes que sob a forma de areia, cascalho, seixo ou calhaus, apresentam alta mobilidade e que se ajustam às condições de ondulação e maré. A dinâmica gera da entre os sedimentos, ondulação e maré permite classificar as praias em dois tipos: dissipativa e reflectiva.
Praia Dissipativa:
Apresenta-se de um modo geral como uma praia exposta caracterizada pela sua forte ondulação e pelos seus sedimentos finos. Neste tipo de praia a zona de rebentação é larga, podendo atingir algumas centenas de metros, as ondas rebentam longe da face da praia, decaindo progressivamente em altura à medida que dissipam sua energia através da zona de rebentação, que se encontra associada a bancos de areia dispostos paralelamente à praia. O declive da praia é normalmente baixo e a presença de campos dunares é frequente.
Praia Reflectiva:
A praia do tipo reflectiva surge quando as condições do mar são calmas e o sedimento é de maior dimensão. Este tipo de praias são relativamente curtas no comprimento em comparação com os outros tipos de praia porque tendem a formar-se zonas abrigadas, no entanto estas possuem maior declividade que as anteriores. São praias mais sensíveis à poluição pela baixa capacidade de dispersão de contaminantes e são ambientes que dependem do aporte de nutrientes externos para a sua manutenção.

In general, the beaches can be defined as a sediment deposits, sediments that in the form of sand, gravel or pebbles, have high mobility and adjust to the conditions of ripple and tide. The dynamics generated by sediment, rippling and tide can be used to classify beaches into two types: dissipative and reflective.
Dissipative Beach:
Is generally presented as an exposed beach characterized by its strong undulation and its fine sediments. In this type of beach the surf zone is wide, reaching a few hundred meters, the waves break away from the face of the beach, decreasing progressively in height as they dissipate their energy through the zone of surf normally associated with banks of sand parallel to the beach. The slope of the beach is usually low and the presence of dune fields is frequent.
Reflective Beach:
The reflective type beach appears when the conditions of the sea are calm and the sediment have greater dimensions. These types of beaches are relatively short in length compared to other types of beaches because they tend to form in sheltered areas, however these have a greater slope than the previous ones. These beaches are more sensitive to pollution due to the low dispersion capacity of contaminants and are environments that depend on the supply of external nutrients for their maintenance.
