This cache is located in Balsom park, at the end of William Street in New Plymouth.
There is another cache in the park, so take the time to visit (if you havnt already) GC22EYJ (Crushed and Broken)
This area was orinally a quarry. Rocks were hauled out of here for making breakwaters when the power station was being built at Port Taranaki.
The Port was established in 1875, and construction of the main breakwater began in 1881 with Frederic Carrington ceremoniously laying the first stone.
Balsom park was named after Owen Balsom, who was the Chairman of the North Taranaki Council. He pushed for the area to become public reserve. Initally the quarry company wanted the area to be subdivided, but they were persuaded to sell it for a recreation reserve in 1979.
The area is also a working farm, so stock may be present, please make sure you leave all gates as you find them, and keep a close eye on your dogs (and your shoes, as there is lots of poop!)
This cache is also in close proximity to the river, so please, keep close watch of your little ones!
