Does anyone know what used to be in this location? I've asked everyone I know from Hubbardston and I haven't gotten an answer. It's an interesting spot with the stairs that lead no where! When I drive by I make up a story about the stairs- where they led, and who used to walk up them. I created this cache so that others can visit this place and perhaps one day we will learn the history of this spot.
Thanks to kayak4Geo and his Hubbardston historian we now know the history of this spot. History of the First Backhoe and the First Tractor Loader Backhoe Wain-Roy Corp. (and the first Hydraulic Thumb) The backhoe is characterized by being a hydraulic digger mounted to the back side of a tractor with a bucket and a boom arm that digs toward the operator. The backhoe has a hydraulic swing frame that allows the arm and bucket to be swung to the side for dumping without moving the machine. The backhoe has hydraulic outriggers to stabilize the tractor and to transmit the force to the ground rather than through the rubber tires. The backhoe typically has a swivel seat that allows the operator to rotate around and face forward to use the tractor when not using the backhoe. The Tractor Loader Backhoe (TLB) consists of the backhoe as listed above, mounted on a rubber tired wheel loader, as opposed to simply being mounted on a non-loader type tractor. Many references incorrectly say that the first backhoe was developed by the JCB Company in 1954 or by Case Corporation in 1957. Although it is true that Case produced the first integrated Tractor Loader Backhoe (whereby all the components were manufactured and warrantied by the same manufacturer), the true development of the backhoe actually began in 1947 by the inventors that started the Wain-Roy Corporation of Hubbardston, Massachusetts. In 1947 Wain-Roy Corporation developed and tested the first actual backhoes. In April of 1948 Wain-Roy Corporation sold the very first all hydraulic backhoes, mounted to a Ford Model 8N tractor, to the Connecticut Light and Power Company for the sum of $705. (quoted from http://www.digrock.com/originalbackhoe.html) You are looking for a 35 mm film canister in the typical spot. No room in cache for swag. BYOP. FTF gets bragging rights only; There is plenty of parking right at GZ. ***PLEASE USE THESE UPDATED COORDINATES PROVIDED BY BOBFEELEY: N42 26.901 W071 58.063*** Thank you, Bob.
